The best thermal spas in Cantabria are the Gran Hotel Balneario de Puente Viesgo, Castilla Termal Solares, Balneario de La Hermida and Balneario de Liérganes — four of Cantabria's six official spas with mineral-medicinal waters — plus hotel spas like Privilegio de Vara in Noja or the thalassotherapy centre at Eurostars Hotel Real in Santander. A thermal circuit costs on average between €21 and €40 per person.
Cantabria's thermal tradition goes back to the 19th century, when wealthy returnees from the Americas turned towns like Solares and Liérganes into destinations for mineral-water bathing. Six of those spas — Puente Viesgo, Solares, Liérganes, Alceda, Las Caldas de Besaya and La Hermida — are still open today, as noted by Cantabria's own tourist board, with waters officially declared of public utility. We've added four coastal hotel spas that don't draw from a mineral spring but offer thermal-leisure or thalassotherapy circuits every bit as serious.
To build this list we checked every spa one by one: real address, price for stand-alone circuit access (not the stay-and-spa packages, which change price weekly) and what sets it apart from the rest. We left out several hotels that advertise a 'spa' but only have a heated pool with no proper circuit. The ranking combines the size of the facilities and the authenticity of the thermal water — and, when it's a toss-up, proximity to Bareyo.
Gran Hotel Balneario de Puente Viesgo
This is Cantabria's largest and best-known spa, with the Templo del Agua as its star circuit: two hours of contrast pools, bubble beds, a Finnish sauna and Turkish bath, inside a building dating back to 1875, right at the entrance to the Valles Pasiegos. The simpler Circuito Cántabro, themed around the area's prehistoric caves — Puente Viesgo has the Cueva del Castillo within walking distance of the hotel — costs €28 a session. It's the benchmark every other Cantabrian spa gets measured against, and the most complete option for anyone who prefers big facilities over an intimate circuit.
Castilla Termal Balneario de Solares
It has Cantabria's largest thermal pool: 849 m² and over 800,000 litres of water flowing straight from the Fuencaliente spring, under a dome modelled on Rome's Pantheon in its Balnea Romana circuit. It belongs to the Castilla Termal chain, which shows in a service that feels more hotel than rural spa. Stand-alone access to the thermal pool costs €21 an hour; the full contrast circuit costs more. It sits in Trasmiera, the same district as Bareyo, which makes it the closest of the six official spas to us.
Balneario de La Hermida
The hottest waters in Cantabria: they emerge at over 50°C in the La Hermida gorge, on the way to the Picos de Europa. The thermal-leisure circuit runs 80 minutes and combines a Greco-Roman-style Templo del Agua with the cave-themed Circuito Cántabro, plus a natural thermal cave that gives the experience its name. It costs €39 per person. The setting — hemmed in by near-vertical rock walls, with the Deva river running alongside — is unlike any other spa in the region, and it's the furthest from the coast of the six official spas.
Balneario de Liérganes
This is the one with the best legend: Liérganes is famous for the story of the Hombre Pez (Fish Man), a young man who dove into the Miera river in the 17th century and resurfaced years later turned into a sea creature. The spa, with over 200 years of history, offers a 50-minute circuit — a thermal pool with underwater and air jets, or the Balnea Lustral circuit with dry and wet thermal rooms — for €34. It has fewer facilities than Puente Viesgo or Solares, but the village around it makes up for that, with stone arcades and the river itself running through the centre.
Posada-Spa Privilegio de Vara
This is the only spa on the list just fifteen minutes from Bareyo, in Noja. It doesn't have mineral-medicinal waters — it's a Nirvana-Spa circuit with a heated pool, jacuzzi, Finnish sauna, Turkish bath and ice cabin — but the inn's small size, with only 13 rooms, means it's never overcrowded, which is more than can be said for the big spas on a summer weekend. For anyone staying in the area who wants a couple of hours of circuit without getting on the motorway inland, it's the most practical option of all.
Eurostars Hotel Real
This is the only one on the list using seawater instead of mineral water: the thalassotherapy centre at the Eurostars Hotel Real, facing Playa de los Peligros, heats seawater to 32°C for a 90-minute circuit with hydromassage jets, sauna, Turkish bath and aromatherapy. The hotel has been running since 1917 and the spa spans 1,400 m² across three floors, with views over the Bay of Santander. It's the choice for pairing the circuit with a city plan — the Centro Botín, El Sardinero — in the same afternoon, something no inland spa lets you do.
Balneario de Alceda
Right in the Toranzo Valley, with outdoor thermal pools flowing at 26°C straight from the spring, plus a heated indoor pool with hydromassage jets and swan-neck spouts. It's one of the more family-run Cantabrian spas, without the scale of Puente Viesgo, and it's often the fallback for anyone who can't get a spot at the two big ones in the Valles Pasiegos. The village, Alceda, is tiny — there's little more than the spa and a handful of houses around it.
Balneario Las Caldas de Besaya
This is the smallest and most intimate of the six official spas, in Los Corrales de Buelna. Its thermal-leisure circuit — the Templo del Agua, with sauna, steam bath, contrast showers and jacuzzi — runs two hours and allows only one session per person per stay, which keeps it from getting as crowded as the bigger spas. One detail works in its favour right now in July: it closes from 12 December to 1 March, so at the moment it's in full season with none of the restrictions of other months of the year.
Hotel Playamar
Right on the beachfront at Playa de Salvé, 150 metres from Laredo's yacht club. The thermal circuit costs €30 per session and includes what you'd expect from a coastal hotel spa: a hydromassage pool, sauna, Turkish bath and contrast showers, with no claim to mineral-medicinal water. Its strength isn't the facilities — more modest than a historic spa's — but the location: straight from the circuit onto the sand, no need to get in the car.
Agua Viva Eco H Wellness
Closing the list is a small hotel built using bio-construction principles, in Mioño, next to Castro Urdiales, with cliff views from the Alto de la Cruz. Its spa circuit is simple — a jet pool, jacuzzi, Turkish bath and contrast shower — but the hotel goes for a calmer, more eco-conscious profile than the rest of the list, with only seven rooms. It's the easternmost of the ten, almost on the border with the Basque Country, for anyone combining the spa with a visit to Castro Urdiales.
What you need to know
Every spa on this list requires advance booking, by phone or online, at least 24-48 hours ahead in high season. In July and August, especially at Puente Viesgo and Solares, book a week ahead if you're planning a weekend visit. Bring a swimsuit and flip-flops; almost no Cantabrian spa requires a swimming cap, but several recommend one in the mineral-water pools. A stand-alone thermal circuit — no massage or extra treatment — runs between €21 and €40 per person; adding a 25-30 minute massage usually adds another €20 to €35. Access with young children is limited to specific time slots at several spas, so it's worth asking when you book if you're travelling as a family. And if the spa has genuine mineral-medicinal waters — the six grouped under the Asociación de Balnearios de Cantabria — switch your phone off: these circuits are built for losing track of time.
A thermal circuit isn't an occasional luxury in Cantabria — it's a tradition over a century and a half old, built on six springs that have never stopped flowing.
None of these ten spas is around the corner from just anywhere in Cantabria, but they are close from a well-placed base — and that, in the end, is the real advantage of staying in Bareyo: a spa day in Solares or Noja doesn't mean losing the afternoon to driving, it means getting back with plenty of time for a relaxed dinner.
