One of the questions guests staying several weeks in Bareyo ask us most is what to do if someone in the group falls ill, or simply where to get a box of paracetamol on a Sunday afternoon. The short answer is that the area is well covered, though not obviously so unless you know how public healthcare is organised in this part of Cantabria.
Bareyo, together with Meruelo, Noja and Arnuero, makes up the Meruelo Basic Health Zone, under Health Area II based in Laredo. That means day-to-day primary care is very close, within the municipality itself, while any serious emergency is referred to Laredo Hospital or, if the case requires it, to the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital in Santander.
Ajo clinic, the closest primary care
The Ajo Local Clinic, on Avenida del Faro, is the health centre serving Bareyo, Ajo and Güemes directly within the Meruelo Basic Health Zone. It's a small clinic, refurbished a few years ago, with several family medicine consulting rooms, a nursing room and space set up for blood draws and dressings. It takes appointments for general medicine and nursing; for paediatrics, midwifery or physiotherapy, appointments are usually referred to the main health centre in Meruelo. In high season, when the area's population multiplies several times over due to tourism, it's worth booking with some margin if it's not urgent.
Meruelo Health Centre, the hub of the basic zone
Meruelo Health Centre, in San Miguel de Meruelo, is the hub of the basic zone that Bareyo belongs to, and it concentrates the services the Ajo clinic doesn't offer daily: paediatrics, midwifery, physiotherapy and social work, as well as family medicine and nursing. It's about 10 minutes by car from Ajo. Appointments are booked by phone, through the Servicio Cántabro de Salud app, or in person at the centre itself, with morning hours Monday to Friday.
Laredo Hospital, the reference for emergencies
For any emergency beyond what a clinic or health centre can handle, the reference hospital for the whole area is Laredo Hospital, about 25 minutes by car from Bareyo. It has a 24-hour emergency service. For cases requiring a specialty not available there, or for more complex surgeries and treatments, the usual referral is to the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital, in Santander, about 30-35 minutes via the motorway. In any emergency, the fastest and safest thing is to call 061 first: the service itself decides whether an ambulance is needed and which centre to head to depending on severity.
Pharmacies in Ajo, with rotating duty cover in the area
For day-to-day needs, Farmacia Miriam Crespo, in Ajo, is the closest one within the municipality. Outside its regular hours, Bareyo belongs to a pharmacy zone where 24-hour duty cover rotates weekly among several pharmacies in nearby towns — Meruelo, Noja, Arnuero and Isla — so the duty pharmacy isn't always the same one. The most reliable way to find out which one is on duty on a given day is to check the list from the Cantabria Pharmacists' Association, or ask directly at the Ajo pharmacy, which usually has the current rota posted in the window.
