In 48 hours you can put together a full romantic getaway from Bareyo: day one with El Capricho de Gaudí in Comillas and a wine tasting at Bodegas Vidular, dinner by the sea in Noja, and day two with a thermal circuit in Solares and sunset at the castle-lighthouse of Santa Ana, in Castro-Urdiales.
You don't need to cross half the country to disconnect as a couple. Less than an hour from Bareyo there's more than enough variety — a modernist folly, a family-run winery, a century-old spa and a sunset over a castle — to fill two days without repeating a single plan.
This itinerary is a flexible guide, not a fixed schedule: each stop has its recommended time and booking, but it can be stretched or shortened depending on how much time you have. The thread running through it is simple — alternate something cultural, something food-related and something restful each half-day, without more than forty minutes in the car at a stretch.
Day 1, morning: El Capricho de Gaudí, in Comillas
The only building Gaudí ever built outside Catalonia stands in Comillas, just over an hour from Bareyo along the coast. Villa Quijano — its real name — was completed between 1883 and 1885, with 2,500 m² of gardens made for a slow walk.
Open every day from 9:00am to 7:30pm, tickets cost €7 (audio guide in five languages included, free up to age 6). It's worth arriving mid-morning, before the midday coach groups, then heading down to the fishing harbour, a five-minute walk away, for a coffee by the sea.
Day 1, midday: wine tasting at Bodegas Vidular
On the way back towards Bareyo, in Bárcena de Cicero, Bodegas Vidular makes for a stop of a good hour: vineyard, history and pairing. The 18th-century house has been run by the same family since 1999, and the guided visit ends with a wine tasting paired with local cheese and cured meats, for €8 per person.
It's a small family winery without the set-up for drop-in groups — booking a couple of days ahead is enough, no need to plan weeks in advance.
Day 1, evening: romantic dinner at Pombera, overlooking the sea in Noja
Twenty minutes from Bareyo, on Ris beach in Noja, Restaurante Pombera brings local produce-driven cooking to a terrace facing the Cantabrian Sea. It's one of the few places in the area where you can have dinner with a sea view without needing a reservation months in advance, though in summer it's worth booking a few days ahead.
The set menu runs around €17.50, and the à la carte menu goes up to €30-40 per person on weekends. With 4.2 out of 5 across more than two thousand reviews, it's one of the best-rated restaurants on the Trasmiera coast.
Day 2, morning: thermal circuit at Castilla Termal Solares
Day two starts at an easy pace at Cantabria's oldest spa: Castilla Termal Solares, 35-45 minutes from Bareyo. The Belle Époque building houses an 850,000-litre thermal pool at 32-34 degrees, with hydromassage beds, jets and waterfalls.
Access is sold mostly as vouchers and accommodation packages — one night for two with breakfast and thermal circuit, from €243 — so it's worth calling directly (942 52 13 13) for the standalone entry rate on the date you're interested in.
Day 2, afternoon: sunset at the Santa Ana castle-lighthouse, Castro-Urdiales
The closing stop is 40 minutes from Bareyo, in Castro-Urdiales, almost on the border with the Basque Country. The Castillo de Santa Ana is a 12th-century fortress on a headland, with a lighthouse lit since 1853, reached by crossing the medieval bridge in the town centre.
It's one of the best spots on the Cantabrian coast to watch the sunset, and it doesn't appear in our guide to viewpoints near Bareyo because it sits a little further east, almost on the way to the Basque Country. Arriving half an hour before sunset leaves plenty of time to cross the bridge and find a spot before it fills up.

Essential bookings: dinner at Pombera and the visit to Vidular, especially on weekends. It's best to confirm the Solares thermal circuit in advance on a specific date.
Budget for two: from €60-70 (wine tasting + dinner), not counting the spa, which depends on the package chosen.
With only one day: keep Comillas in the morning and Pombera in the evening; save the spa and Castro-Urdiales for another getaway.
Forty minutes separate Gaudí's modernist garden from a sunset over a 12th-century castle. In Cantabria, distance is never the excuse.
Neither Comillas, nor Castro-Urdiales, nor the winery in Bárcena de Cicero need anyone to discover them — they've been there for decades. What changes things is having, right in the middle of the two days, somewhere to come back and sleep without rushing to pack.
