Yes, you can go on holiday to Cantabria with your dog: the region has dog beaches open all year round, such as Los Molinucos (Santander) or La Riberuca (Suances), and others with summer hours, like Berria, in Santoña. Outside those zones, most beaches ban dogs between June and September.
Travelling to Cantabria with a dog has nothing to do with winging it. The region has municipal beach regulations that vary from one town to the next, dog zones that get approved or scrapped from one year to the next, and a range of hiking trails and restaurants that, on the whole, treat pets well — but it pays to know where.
Noja is the clearest example of why a generic list of dog beaches pulled from the internet isn't enough: Helgueras beach worked as a dog zone until 2024, but since then the town council hasn't reinstated any stretch, and the Noja municipal beach ordinance bans animals along the entire municipality's coastline between 1 June and 30 September, as well as during Easter week. That's why, before booking, it's worth knowing which beach near Bareyo still allows dogs in the middle of summer.
Cantabria beaches for dogs near Bareyo
The closest option to Bareyo with dog access in high season is Berria beach, in Santoña, just over twenty minutes by car. It's a long Blue Flag beach connecting Monte Buciero with Argoños; in summer, dog access is limited to outside bathing hours, meaning before 10:00 and after 20:00, while the rest of the year there's no time restriction.
If you'd rather have a dedicated dog zone with no time limits, you'll need to go a bit further: Los Molinucos, in Santander, allows dogs 365 days a year at any hour, and La Riberuca, in Suances, with 850 metres of sand, is one of the largest dog beaches in the region and also runs year-round. Both are 35-45 minutes from Bareyo.
Outside these specific zones, the general rule in most Cantabria municipalities, including Noja, works the other way round: beaches banned for dogs during bathing season, unless a dedicated dog zone has been expressly set up.
Routes to walk your dog near Bareyo
The coastal path linking Cuberris beach with Antuerta beach, within the municipality of Bareyo itself, is dog-friendly with no restrictions: it's a five-minute walk with no cars involved, so your dog can go off-leash if their behaviour allows it and there are no other bathers nearby.
For a longer route, a stretch of the Camino de Santiago del Norte crosses this section of Cantabria's eastern coast and can be walked with a dog with no limit beyond common sense: keep them leashed near livestock or traffic, and bring enough water in the hottest months. That said, if the plan includes sleeping in one of the Camino's public hostels, most don't accept pets; the alternative is the area's private rural accommodation and guesthouses, which usually do accept them, typically with the dog in an outdoor area or a specific room.
Where to eat with your dog near Bareyo
In Bareyo itself, Restaurante Pescador welcomes dogs both on its terrace and in the garden area, a handy option if your beach day at Cuberris or Antuerta runs into lunchtime. As with any restaurant with a terrace, it's worth calling ahead on high-season weekends, when capacity fills up faster.
